Since my latest mini-implosion in the online poker world I've been doing a few other things. I mean after the BBT4 grind and the futility of trying to qualify for the WSOP via satellite (low buyin of course) I'm back to a very limited bankroll. It's not a bad thing during the summer. I will be back with a ferocity to the MTT's later. Probably at less frequent times...no more MTT's on weeknights..just weekends. I'll be ready and will take the criticism with an open mind. That's hard for me to do but I realize there are many people out there willing to help me change my game for the better. It was also stupid of me to jump back into the MTT's right after my daughter was born last year but it also helped me connect with the outside world on some of those long nights. So I've been listening to a certain new CD constantly among other things. I also plan to get out and see a show or two later this summer. It's hard to get out when you have a baby and a 4 year old in the house right? Last summer was pretty hard to get anything done but now my daughter Meg is over a year old so...fun times are here again!
I didn't want to buy the new Metallica album when it came out after the new year. I'm used to getting a Metallica album and being disappointed time after time. There are a few great moments through out the 90's and the 00's but not the shift back to the music that made them the greatest metal band ever. I didn't think they were capable of even making an album of metal at all. The 'St. Anger' debacle was the nail in the proverbial coffin for me. It sounded like the band 'System of a Down' decided to record a lame Metallica album...that's how it sounded to me anyway. Then the band came out with its biggest mistake ever...the movie 'Some kind of Monster'....Jesus Christmas...if I wasn't depressed about the band before that then I know that every single fan from the past 25 years should be after seeing it. It should have been called 'Some kind of Monstrous Mistake'.
I know this all sound juvenile but I've been a fan since '84 when I was a robust 14 years old. I heard 'Ride the Lightning' on a metal show on the radio and I had to get that album. I found out they had another album called 'Kill 'em all' and of course I latched on to that like a lamprey...MUCH to my parents chagrin. I figured it would be more 'Nothing else Matters' and 'The Unforgiven' than the good songs on the Black album (and by that I mean probably half of the songs....I'm not a big fan by any means of the lumbering ballads or the heavy lumbering rock that made them so middle-of-the-road in the 90's). Musically this pained me to no end...I am a fan of many genres of music but I am basically a metal head. People always assume that I am not a metal head because of the clean cut look but yes....I loves me some old school metal. I am not a big fan of the death metal or the guttural vocals that seem to be so popular at the festivals these days though. I like to hear some melody in the music with some basic structure. My attitude about the news of the new album was blase at best. Most big bands dominate for 10 years and then kind of flame out or die. There are only a few bands that can come out with a great album (CD or MP3 download for people chuckling about the 'album' thing) 15 or 20 years after they burst onto the music scene. I can only think of a band like U2, Pink Floyd,The Who or the Rolling Stones at the moment. Actually I think that U2 is about the only one that can do that. 'Tattoo you' came out about 19 years after the Stones started.....'Who are you' came out 13 years after the Who started out....'The Wall' came out only 12 years after Pink Floyd came onto the scene.....U2 came out with what I would consider a really good album almost a full 25 years after they started. At least that gives some idea about how hard it is to come out with an album that is both incredible and at least somewhat innovative after a band has been recording for a decades.
Metallica the band had actually made a great decision in the past couple of years. They decided to hire Ric Rubin to produce 'Death Magnetic' and their next album as well. I knew they were looking for the best producer and Ric Rubin is it. He is well known for producing rap records....but he is also well known for producing some of the best heavy bands of the past two decades. He is also well known for getting the best sound out of the band he is producing...just listen to any Slayer album. There is one comment he made before 'Death Magnetic' came out...he said..."think Master of Puppets for the bands next album sound". I was happy to say the least he referred to the best metal album of all time.
I could imagine the conversation between Ric Rubin and the band Metallica as follows:
RR : "Do you guys want to continue turning out substandard hard rock or do you want to reclaim the thing that made you Metallica.....like Metal maybe??? Hmmmmm?
Band : "Well of course! We've been working hard on bringing our brand of rock to the masses!"
RR : "Guys....I produce for Slayer and System of a Down....what you have been doing for the last 19 years is bringing a lame brand of Metallica rock to the masses. Do you want to be known as METALLICA or HARDRockica....or worse yet HEAVYRockica. Do you want a great album that all your fans know you are capable of creating or just another lametallica album."
Band : (in unison) "You are absolutely right Ric...we will listen to you for the next 5 years and will create music that our fans know we are capable of."
It certainly peaked my interest...but then I heard 'The day that never comes' on the radio. I couldn't believe it...it was straight out of the 90's as I listened to it...but then the second half of the song started coming through. I was happy but 'Black' album happy. Not completely thrilled about it but encouraged. I still didn't buy it when it came out...not until about early March anyway. All I heard on the radio was 'The day...' and 'Cyanide'. I wondered why then checked and the shortest song was 5 minutes long. I have no idea why it took so long to buy the damn thing but when I did it didn't stop playing for a month straight in my car. Here are the tracks and their length. I also noticed an 'Unforgiven III' on there...I thought...oh jeez here we go.
# Title Length
1. "That Was Just Your Life" 7:08
2. "The End of the Line" 7:52
3. "Broken, Beat & Scarred" 6:25
4. "The Day That Never Comes" 7:56
5. "All Nightmare Long" 7:58
6. "Cyanide" 6:39
7. "The Unforgiven III" 7:47
8. "The Judas Kiss" 8:01
9. "Suicide & Redemption" 9:58
10. "My Apocalypse" 5:01
OK...so after listening to it a million times I am about as happy as a fan can be. The CD aptly starts with the sound of a heart beat. I know their not going to completely avoid the last 19 years of recording style and songwriting but I'll say it now. I've been waiting for them to release and album like this for 20 years....20 effin years. This album come out a full 25 years after 'Kill 'em all' came out. Think about that for a second. Any fan of Metallica should be impressed by this album....at least that's my opinion. They recorded an album that puts all of their well known styles for the first decade. The thrashy riffing...the machine gun style riffing...the double base drum beats....the sick guitar solos....all of it. All of it without sounding retro or completely different. I heard the first track 'That was just your life' and couldn't believe what I was hearing. Somber intro....dual harmony guitars...fast time change riffs. That was what drew me to the band in the first place...but it also didn't sound like they were just creating an old style sound. It continues through most of the album....I'm not completely in love with everything on the album. I would say 1 and a half songs I could do without (first half of 'The day that never comes' and 'The Unforgiven III' is about it. Unforgiven almost gives me a break for a few minutes so I'll listen to anyway. There is even an epic instrumental almost 10 minutes long for you fans of the 80's albums...yet another hint at bringing back the original fan base.
"All Nightmare Long' is obviously the centerpiece of the album...if it wasn't intended to be it is now.......the version you hear on the radio is cut down a full 2 minutes and just doesn't sound right. So if you listen to the following version and the CD version you will be surprised after the into there is a straight thrash riff...then the a spot where the drums, bass and guitars all machine gun gallop riff in unison....OI LOIK IT! There is also a bizarre video that can't really be explained...but who cares?
All Nightmare Long
Edit :
I also forgot to mention some other incredible comeback albums. Although I wouldn't put them in the 'landmark' category like 'Death Magnetic' or the other previous bands who've had a landmark comeback album.
AC/DC : They aren't Metal but they rock.....'Black Ice' released 34 years after High Voltage in '75 and 28 years after Brian Johnson joined up with the boys from down under. That's quite a feat....'Black Ice' is their best album since probably 'Fly on the wall'. I have to admit I am not a fan of their stuff after that...but Black Ice is classic Brian Johnson-ACDC
Iron Maiden : I understand from the Maiden fans that 'A Matter of life and death' is quite a CD and brought them back to their original fan base although I haven't heard anything from it....and if no radio airplay is any indication it must be really good.
'A Matter...' was released in '06 a full 26 years after 'Iron Maiden' was released in '80 and a full 24 years after Bruce Dickinson turned them into a real band in '82. Another great 'Comeback' CD but probably not anything like a landmark album.
Judas Priest : 'Nostradamus' was released in '08 a full 34 years after 'Rocka Rolla' in '74. I have listened to the CD and I like it but the CD is simply not going to sell enough or be played enough to be considered 'groundbreaking'. I think it is the perfect CD for them and where they are going though...it should make their hardcore fans very happy.
Changing genres :
The Grateful Dead : 'In The Dark' was released a full 20 years after their debut 'The Grateful Dead' in '67. Wasn't a groundbreaking album but it brought back the whole jam band thing and set the stage for Phish to come and take over the jam band world.
The Allman Bros. : I love the Allman Bros.....I've gone to see them every summer since '92. They give me something every time so I keep going back...best band to see live IMO that isn't a Metal band. They released 'Where it all begins' in '94 a full 25 years after their first album 'The Allman Brothers Band' in '69.
There are probably a lot of other albums/CD's by a lot of other bands but those stand out as big comeback albums and some of them started or restarted their respective genres. It just points out just how hard it is for these most talented bands to come out with new and great material after recording for decades...that is all!

You want to laugh?
Read this post....not only is it funny but the delivery is gold.....
The subliminal one also strikes comedy gold with a simple picture and a phrase.....
Also people should congratulate Lana aka LJ aka pvanharibo (sorry about the link to your old blog but I'm having trouble with the firewall constraints again) on one hell of a run ending yesterday in the WSOP 1500 H.O.R.S.E tournament....
SprStoner also hit big last week.....can't link right now for obvious reasons.....
One way to actually keep up with many people is Tweetdeck...it's kind of crazy but there are some bloggers and pros that are twittering while they are playing. I didn't think it would be a good thing but I was wrong about that...it is fairly addictive...
I will be keeping an eye out for other bloggers who are in the WSOP as we speak.....
EDIT : OMFG...if anybody hasn't seen 'The Hangover' you need to go soon. It is without a doubt the funniest movie I have seen in over 10 years....no doubt...

Miscellany
The Sox are really giving it to the Yanks this year...this makes me happy....we'll see if it continues for the rest of the year. I have to say that pitching wins in the playoffs (not that anybody in the front office of NY really knows this)...and the Yanks have a weak bullpen....and weak middle relief....and some half-assed starters...at least their 3-4-5 starters. The sox have that guy...what's his name again?.....oh yeah...John Smoltz coming back to be their 5th starter. The Rays are much more suited for the post season then the Yanks IMO.
Last week I met Biggestron in the Hahvahd Yahd for a few hoppy beahs. Harvard actually graduated that day....it didn't seem to crowded at Bukowski's but hey...those graduates have to get to their 'green jobs' mighty quick. I wonder what the odds are on them dumping their 'green jobs' for high paying defense attorney jobs etc. when they realize they owe 250.000 grand in student loans? Welcome to the real world...."how you like them apples?" Anyway off from my Harvard tangent....Biggestron AKA Bdidde suggested some tasty almost over hoppy-infused brews. They were excellent as usual...and the BScientist also has the brew master chops and a spiffy new setup at the house. I expect to sample those brews at some point mmmkay? By the end of the night I was all over the hefeweizen wheat beers...can't get enough of them. We talked about Sports and Music....just what I needed instead of the regular poker drama. He got a remastered Who album recently...I think it was 'Who's next'. I made the suggestion that all WHO fans have to know...get the remastered version of 'Live at Leeds'. I think it was released in the mid-90's....maybe the late 90's...but it has about 8 tracks more than the original.....and it is a must have for any rock fan...trust me!
Rumor has it that Phish played in fenway park....I would have been there in the early to mid-90's....not now that I have a 1 and a 4 year old. I also hear DrPauly and his merry band of pranksters came through town. He has great write up of the tour...his town by town travels and the fenway phiasco...mostly on the Coventry blog...if you like Phish you must read. Some of the best shows I have ever been to have been Phish shows....'91 at UMASS for their spring weekend....New years eve at the Worcester Centrum '93 into '94 I believe. As a matter of fact it was one of the top 5 shows of all time for me. I think the last time I saw them was some time around '95 at the brand new UMASS arena. alas....I am more of an old school metal head but there were some good times and good music and good memories had at those old Phish shows.....whooooooooeeeeeeee.......
Rumor has it there is still some major poker tournament series going on right now....um...the BBT4 (Big Congrats to JJOK, ACtyper, CK, and Karma ((whoever that is))....good job and good luck at the WSOP. JJ...how the fuck do you play 2 tourneys in the BBT4 and turn it into 10K+?????? LOL...Congrats!!!).....no....oh yeah the WSOP and SprStoner continued his ridiculous year by placing 3rd in a 2K buy-in I think.....and cashing for some mind blowing amount of cash...again...sick...good luck the rest of the way for you and for all the other bloggers who are out there now and out there later...
How 'bout them Penguins? I am psyched someone is putting up a fight in the Stanley Cup. It's actually an exciting series!! Down 2-0 to the vaunted Detroit RedWings and come back to tie it up with a 2-1 win last weekend...finally a good series. Go Penguins...I can't believe I just rooted for a Pittsburgh team but you have to root against the Evil Empire of Hockey...Don't You?
How's the current administration treating everybody? Don't wanna say I told ya so but I told ya so...but who wants to discuss politics with the summer here? I just can't believe the fawning the media gives Obamalot...it's downright sick...
I won't leave on a down note though...I will do a thorough review of Metallica's new album next....hint : it was worth the wait.

FAWK!
I didn't make it to the BBT TOC. As usual the majority of my stack was lost to a coin flip and couldn't recover from there...in the Big Game and most of the rest of the tourneys. I swear a few big pairs holding up to A-K or my A-K hitting against a medium pair....well you know. So congrats to all that made it and made the big money on the way. I'm going to settle down and take it easy for a week or so...I also monkey tilted on PokerStars during the last month or so. I pretty much broke even for this BBT and couldn't build on last years BBT momentum. I guess that was the last BBT we'll see anyway so the 3 month grind will surely not be visited again anytime soon. I think I won enough FTP points for a jersey though. We'll see if I can use those for satellite entries of something. I'm all set with the jersey....everybody I've seen wear an FTP jersey in a poker room has been a total knob anyway. A huge thanks again to Al for the opportunity given to a bunch of misfit pokah Donks.....
So good luck to all in the TOC...I hope you can turn your WSOP seat into something all of us will envy. Good luck to those who are also playing in the WSOP by their own means...keep us updated on your blogs....won't you?!

BBT4 is winding down
I donked my way to another final table...this time in limit HE Skeeeeelz. I haven't had problems getting to the final table in the BBT...except for the month of April. The problem is I'm usually short stacked when I get there. Last night I built up to a decent stack of over 16K but started to donk it off slowly. My last hand was AxKx....and a rag board flopped. I raised going in and LJ called. I bet the flop and we RRaised all the way to the river and lo' and behold LJ read me correctly. My problem is when I showed strength with the pre-flop raise I thought she would fold. Well she didn't and I donked out 8th. I'm sure that the people at the final table were not too happy with me doubling up LJ. I made the decision to go for it at that time because 1st is the only thing we should be going for...that is those of us without a TOC seat. Nice read LJ....and apparently she went on to win so that leaves me with exactly 6 or 7 chances left. I'm not gonna lie...I didn't stick around to see the conclusion after my crap final table play.
March : I started out with some good play. I made 6 Final tables...made 6 cashes...made 7 in the points finishes. That's not bad out of 18 tourneys played. No win but I figured I have 2 months to go.
April : I figured I can make the points and final tables but I needed to change the way I get there...get there with a stack or don't get there at all. That was a mistake as I only had 1 final table (3rd or 4th in RiverChasers).....made 2 cashes....and only 2 in the Points finishes for the month out of 12 tourneys played. I'm not sure why I missed 5 tourneys but the Sunday start time of 4:30 for the Brit was just not a good time for me and my kids (not that I'm complaining about anything....it's just hard to justify playing online poker with a toddler and baby running/crawling around the house). People with kids will know what I'm talking about and people who don't have no idea what I'm talking about....those who are planning to have kids...plan on it interrupting your poker time for the foreseeable future. So anyway, I changed my play and went for all or nothing in order to get to the final table with a big stack. It worked once but I could have probably made better decisions at certain times. I figured...no big deal...I have a whole month of tourneys left.
May : I reverted back to my original half LAG half tight approach and so far out of 9 tourneys played I have made the final table 3 times (again missing the Brit Bloggerment...for the month...although if there is one on the 31st I will play that and the Big Game that night as well)
I made 3 times in the points but only 1 cash so far. So I need to take advantage of the final table when I get there. If I ever get there with a big stack I need to just run over the final table (ya right...I just sit there in awe of some of the the people who have won multiple tourneys..they just seem to steamroll with good hands and bad hands)....and if I get there as i did last night...I need to at least not make a single mistake.
Two things that have been pointed out to me :
If I have 10 BB's or less just shove. Don't try to steal the Blinds and then fold to a shove. I folded to a couple of shoves on the final table bubble with 10 or less BB's and that is just not the way to win a tourney. I know this but I was practicing it like I have been on Stars for the last year and a half. As I am typing this that is probably my whole problem with my play on Full Tilt. I've had more problems on Full Tilt than PokerStars or Bodog....I am just giving my chips away at the end. Again I know this but for some reason I haven't been executing it. (It may look like I am chip dumping but I can assure you In my twisted mind I am doing the right thing at that time...so I will stop gifting my chips away Limit HE not withstanding).
Don't raise so much out of position. I raise more out of position then I do in position. It seems that I get better hands OOP then In Position. That continues to creep into my play in almost all tourneys...and we all know that is just not a good way to accumulate chips in NLHE tourneys....
These are two things that I struggle with when playing tourneys online. I guess I'll have to revisit the changes I made at the beginning of 2008 and get back to what works. That brings up the other problem I have....Making time to study HH's and training videos etc. Good luck to everybody in the BBT and the TOC should I get there or not. The only way I get to the WSOP is by satellite or a BBT challenge so that is looking unlikely. Not that I won't blow out a small bankroll trying :)
Big time kudos to Al for the BBT4. I salute you and the next time I meet you I will buy you a Soco 'neat'. I met Al at the 2007 Winter gathering for a brief second but he was inundated with multiple shots and people looking for a party messiah.
See all of you BBTrs and stragglers at the MOOKIE tonight!

Sunday Millions questionable hand and Quad Q's
I cashed in the Sunday Millions...and it feels good. I haven't been able to cash in a Sunday major except the Bodog 100K. I got bad beat out 13th with A's BTW in that one..that would've been nice but that's ancient history now. This following hand is of particular interest. It is against one of the better MTTers on PokerStars. I had KK...

This is how every tournament ends for me on Full Tilt Phucker....it's true. The only thing I can think of to do is maybe utilize a stop 'n go type play from now on. I just can't get it done on FTP. I realize its painful to read about bad beats but I'm posting them anyway...it's the only way to fade them away. I also tried to get my chat banned so stay tuned for no words from me in any BBT tourneys...
Another thing I can't understand is how someone can win multiple 28K's or even multiple top threes. Chad should write a book. How the eff do you do it man????....
