Godsmacked! Redux

I got into work today..tired from the long weekend. I had a great weekend in the mountains of North Conway, NH. The usually cool weather for Memorial Day weekend was abnormally warm. Brought my laptop with me to play a few tourneys after the wife and kid are fast asleep. I played a 15.00 buy-in NL MTT on Paradise...I still have some cash on there from the first WSOP/WPBT satellite. I saw that Mean Gene and Lifesagrind were also playing this particular tourney. I went out at about 37th for a small payout..I think Mean Gene was still going...but it was late and I was tired.

I hope everybody took a few moments to reflect on what this past weekend actually means...After all....we are lucky to be where we are as a nation today. Everybody has a relative that was or is currently involved in a war. If it wasn't for those who have served, sacrificed, and died we might be speaking a different language and/or not have the right of free speech that we take for granted.

So I'm back at work today and I find this article on PokerPages. This is a reminder of the the Charity tournament I played at a Castle in Haverhill, MA. I bought in for 150.00 and did a add-on for 50.00...this is right before the rebuy thing was made Illegal buy our Attorney General in MA. Poker and Miscellaneous Stuff: Godsmacked!!!! is the post of the brutal slow motion rockstar suck-out that knocked me out of the tournament at about 14 or 15th out of 85.

Late to the Party as usual......

Questions by TripJax...

1. What is the biggest mistake people make at a NL table?
Without a doubt...It's calling raises with low or medium pair, and gutshot straight draws.

2. What is the biggest mistake people make at a Limit table?
The biggest mistake in limit is to play too many hands and also passive play.

3. Why do you play poker?
It's such a great combination of competition, thought, and strategy. Mainly for the competition...but the profit possibilities are hard to overlook.

4. If you weren't playing poker, what would you be doing?
Probably playing Pool or Golf

5. What is your favorite poker book and why?
It has to be Super System...I keep going back to it more than the others to absorb info.

6. Who is your favorite poker player and why?
I think it's T.J. Cloutier...he has the right attitude and doesn't 'act' over the top when he wins or when he loses.

7. Which poker player do you dislike the most and why?
I don't dislike any player more than any other...All of the pros are fun to watch. I think it's more the type of player such as your 'wannabe' types that appear in a game whether it's a charity tournament or a casino 2-4 limit game.

8. Do your coworkers know about your blog?
I think one or two may have seen me posting to it..but I don't think anybody really knows. However, I do have to keep it relatively anonymous in order to avoid possible problems.

9. What is the most you have won in a cash game or MTT (both live and online)?
Live MTT I won 550.00 (tied) a local charity tourney in my town..we chopped between the last two because it was getting late and the chip lead was low. Online MTT-200.00
Live ring-game at Foxwoods 400.00 in 1-2 NL. Online ring won 250.00

10. What is the most you have lost in a cash game or in one day total (both live and online)? Lost about 180.00 online ring game 2-4 limit a couple of days after my daughter was born...I guess I was tired. Lost 200.00 in a live charity MTT with re-buys.

11. Who was your first poker blog read?
It was most definitely Party Poker Blog by Iggy.

12. What satisfies you more, your aces holding up for a big pot or a bluff working for a big pot? That pot that you know you can only win with a ballsy bluff! What's more satisfying than making someone lay a hand down that has you beat?

13. Why do you blog?
It's therapeutic for me to convey what's on my mind..just put it all out there in a steam-of-consciousness kind of way. I did this for a long time with no readers so I do it mainly for myself.

14. Do you read blogs from an RSS reader like bloglines or do you visit each blog?
I usually visit each blog...I do however read a couple of blogs from an RSS reader..like Bill Rini's.

15. Would you rather play poker for a living than do what you currently do for a living?
I would if I could but I can't so I won't.

16. Do you wear a tin foil hat on occasion?
Only when I play a large MTT on Party Poker...you can just smell the multi-accounting sons o' bitches everywhere!

17. If you had to pin it down to one specific trait, what does a great poker player have (or do) that separates them from an average player?
One trait........above all else......PATIENCE.

18. Is Drizz the coolest person on the planet for naming his baby Vegas?
That is very cool...I read his blog and it makes me laugh. There is a lot to live up to in that name though...

19. What is your primary poker goal and are you close to accomplishing it?
My primary poker goal is to final table a major tournament....or for that matter a 1,000+ buy-in tourney.

20. What is your primary online site and why? Primary site for ring games is Party Poker and/was Empire Poker.....If you can build a bankroll there is no better site. Primary site for MTT's and STT's is PokerStars and Ultimate Bet...I seem to do better on both for some reason and they offer more of a variety.

21. What site do you dislike and why? I really hate Party...but only for the MTT's....I can never really get anywhere on their MTT's.

Improving and adjusting your game....

I had an awesome weekend...Although lately I've been really hurting in my golf game. I'm usually the guy that goes to these best ball tourneys and struggles to put together enough shots to include on the card...even though you only need two drives! I was obviously apprehensive about going. I made sure everybody knew not to count on me for anything! They all know what happens my left-handed karate chop swing hits a golf ball and it's not a pretty sight. I talked to a friend of a friend who golfs almost everyday during the warm months. He was also at the golf weekend/tourney/get-together in Bethel Maine. It's at this old country club in Bethel Maine and it was quite a nice place. I asked "please help...I need you to watch me and give me a couple of swings and give me some tips"....so he watched and told me "You really do suck"..."Just kidding..I'll help you out". So he gave me some tips on how to adjust the grip and to "not pick up your front foot like your swinging a baseball bat!". So I practiced some more shots and began to find a a golf swing. This was all one hour before the best-ball tourney! This is an annual golf weekend that has 18 holes of golf for 3 days in a row. The first day is a regular 18 hole game (The weather sucked on Friday in Maine though) and the second day is an 18 hole Best-Ball scramble. The third day is a Best-Ball shotgun tourney. There is also lots of booze, grilled food, and poker after the golf. The condos are right on the golf course and we were able to use the golf carts to go to and fro the clubhouse...talk about lazy!

I'm at the first tee and all of the golf teams are watching (8 teams-four apiece)..I usually would just pick up the ball and club and go to the next hole but not this time! I crushed my first drive (with the used Wilson fat-shaft 1 wood that I bought a couple of days before that) and never looked back that day. I also hit this incredible 15' foot chip that landed in the cup to give us a birdie on a par five! It was a chip that had to land 4' or 5' feet above the cup and roll backwards and lo' and behold it falls into the cup ala Tiger Woods in the 2005 Masters! My friends all started screaming...it was a shot that will probably cost me a lot of money due to the fact I will probably get as addicted to the game as I have with Poker.

This talk of adjustment to my game reminds me that I need to make adjustments to my Hold'em tourney play. If I make the money it's usually with a very short stack..I need adjustments! I've read books and articles up the ying-yang but I still can't build up the big stack with any regularity. I'm at a crossroads with my tournament play. I most definitely play tighter live than online....It's just natural for most to do the same thing. I need adjustment to my game...and I can't find the right ones. What some people think is wrong seems to be right for others. It drive me nuts when I see the WPT and you see some pro go all-in with a flush draw on someone who has a big pair...It's not the act of putting someone else all-in on a draw...But the reaction from the ass-kissing hosts! If an amateur did this..and they do...they get killed by the hosts. "I just don't understand what they think they are doing vince!"...."I wouldn't go all-in with only a flush draw!" I know that they are at a final table but that makes one think that they do this to get to the final table in the first place. I guess I'd be interested to see how the pros manage to build there stacks and make final tables often...if you're lucky enough to know a pro then you might actually get an honest answer. I've read Championship No-Limit/Pot Limit by McEvoy and Cloutier and it's a great read...but it seems to be outdated for today's game. I'll have to find a book about today's NL Texas Hold'em tournaments and how to beat them. There are three that come to mind...Harrington On Hold'em, Little Green Book, and Kill Phil. I wonder which one could help me adjust my game the most....

The Gemini tourney was of course a great time also...I got home still hungover from the weekend and almost short-stacked my way to a final table on one of the tourneys...oh well...it was still fun...

Oh and this also:

Google gets tough!! but who gives fuck?!!

The following is probably the latest in a series of companies sending out the message that they "do not associate themselves with illegal activities such as gambling websites"...blah blah blah etc. etc. etc. I guess a powerful company like Google can make any rules/demands it wants but this is a stupid poker and miscellaneous stuff blog....not exactly a gambing website. It's also ridiculous that our legislators have nothing better to do (Illegal aliens, deficit, education, etc. etc)than try to ban poker and gambling websites.

They fail to acknowledge that Adsense has been part of this blog since the beginning and now they are just reiterating there policy???

Oh no ....i just realized that I won't be able to collect the 2.16 that I forgot about 1 and half years ago...waah..fuck off google...take your adsense+2.16 and shove it up your holier-than-thou ASS!!!...oh and I'm done ranting about Google here but here is the email....

The great flood of 2006

This is bad....The Merrimack River is to approach the levels of flooding that it reached in 1938!
My Grandfather used to tell me stories of the hurricane that came through the Northeast and basically devastated the region. It's a good thing I live on top of a huge hill even though it is near the river....

Next WPBT tourney(s)!

Details here
Not much going on here besides poker, beer, sports (hockey playoffs, and baseball of course). I'm going to play NL tourney at a local bar..it's a league with bad NL players and cheap beer. Great for a Thirsty thursday (I haven't said that for 10 years). I hope I can play the next WPBT 'Gemini' night...I'll be away on a golfing excursion from Friday at 5:00AM to Sunday at 5:00PM roughly...nothing but Golf, Booze, and Poker after we eat and drink all day. Not a bad way to spend a weekend!!! It was created by some guy who wanted a weekend away from the Fam....and it has taken on a life of its own. I'm really, really, realllllyyyy bad at golf so i'm lucky its a 'Best-Ball' Tourney format. Thank god for me and the foursome that I will be rounding out....I will however be on the reverse side of the skill curve when we play poker. Everybody will be really drunk......it will be like playing on Party Poker at 12:30 AM on a Saturday night....Shoot the fish in the barrel.

I am not Poker Stud....

Well I gave all my chips to 'UpforPoker' and 'Soxlover'...looks like he put them to good use with a win. I played way to aggressive....I tried to accumulate some chips after the break but everytime I bet the other guy had a concealed pair or a set. My PC was a major cause of grief over the weekend though..I got blinded out of a tourney on PokerStars on Friday when I was in 14th place with over 100k in chips....and the PC froze. I need a new hard drive...fine friggin time for that to happen!! I wasn't sure if my PC would freeze-up again for last nights WPBT event so I was impatient and apprehensive...
Much to my chagrin my standings in the WPBT POY race took a hit...down to about 13th now...I need to get back on the horse...
